My Cozy Winter Family Room
There is nothing better than snuggling up in a cozy winter family room when it is cold out!
When I was adding a little after Christmas winter decor to my family room, the #1 thing on my agenda was to create a feeling of warmth and coziness.
I used just about every trick in the book, that I could think of, to give Pookie and I that feeling of being enveloped in a warm and welcoming cocoon of coziness.
I sprinkled fuzzy, comfy, cushy throws throughout the room and added texture everywhere! This created an atmosphere of total relaxation!
Here’s a testament to the coziness. Our little scamp of a furbaby, Buddy, jumped right onto this fuzzy throw just as soon as I had it in place!
Winter can be hard to decorate for and keeping it cozy feeling is even harder! One of my tricks is to mimic what I see through my windows – evergreens, pinecones and white to represent snow, without the cold.
There’s a super simple coffee table vignette using an old wood tray and white pillar candles of varying sizes filled in with greenery and pinecones.
The woven basket on my fireplace hearth is filled with more greenery and a couple of grapevine orbs for even more texture and warmth.
And my fireplace mantel still sports the same greenery that was there for Christmas. You can take a closer look at my winter mantel and get step by step directions for making the wreath and snowflakes by clicking HERE.
Anyone who knows me at all, knows that I adore mixing patterns! And I made sure to mix several throughout this room – mixed patterns on the pillows that are scattered around, on the various throws and even on the floor pouf.
Do you have any tricks up your sleeve for keeping your home cozy during the cold and dreary winter months?
A very welcoming room.
I really like the way that you mix patterns. The pouf and pillows (on your leather chair and couch) either match or are a very good match of material. They look really great together long with your rug.
I like all of your coziness! Makes me want to come over and chill out!
I love all the cute pillows and blankets! It does look very cozy! 😉
Have incorporated many of these tricks too- texture everywhere- here in San Antonio. Love to see your posts!
This is such a petty room and this looks like a place I could just curl up and stay all day.
Love the natural textures.
Love the chairs near the fireplace. Such a cozy spot to nap or read!
So beautiful and cozy…indeed! Thank you for sharing your beautiful home! Hugs, Leticia
I’m so glad I found your website! I love your ideas! You make decorating easy for me!
In the last picture with the loveseat, what color is the paint on the wall?
Hi Vicky. The picture that you’re referring to isn’t in my home. It’s in the home of Barb from The Everyday Home. If you’ll click on “The Everyday Home”, that is under the picture, it will take you to her blog, where you can leave a comment and ask her about the paint color. 😀
Thanks Susy! I always enjoy your posts!
Lovely, Suzy… My fave is the mantel/hearth. Love the snowflakes and pine cones… and greens!
Did you make the tassels that are hanging on your ladder? Do you have a tutorial for that?
Hi Julie. Yes, I made those tassels, but I don’t have a tutorial for it. It’s easy to do though. Here’s what I did: 1) cut a piece of cardboard to the finished size/length that you want your tassel to be, 2) wrap yarn around the cardboard multiple times, until you get the thickness that you want your tassel to be, 3) before you remove the yarn from the cardboard, run a piece of yarn (or I used jute twine) under all of the loops at one end and tie in a knot, leaving long “tails” so that you can hang or attach your tassel wherever you want to, 4) gently remove the loops of yarn from the cardboard, 5) cut the loops of yarn in half, at the end opposite where you tied the loops together, 6) wrap additional yarn (or twine) around the whole tassel, slightly down from the top and tie in a knot, clip the ends closely, 7) trim the ends of the tassel to even it up if necessary. Hope this makes sense! 😀
Thank you so much! That was very kind of you to take the time to give us a tutorial here!
Warm and cozy for sure!
I love the ladder with the throws; it definitely makes the room look inviting! How tall are the shutters on your mantle? They add a great put-together look to the area. Do you remember where you found them?
Hi Pam. The shutters are 34″ tall, but they aren’t true shutters. They’re from a pair of bifold doors that I took apart and then cut each section in half. 😀
I love all the greenery and blankets around!!!
Looking for that ironwork/wood piece on your mantle! I have the Magnolia wreath from Joanna’s collection and would love to use it on a background like you have.
Hi Linda. You can find a link for where to purchase the piece above my mantel in this blog post: http://www.worthingcourtblog.com/shopping-guide-to-worthing-court/
Throws, especially fur throws say “cozy” to me. Candles are so inviting when it’s cold outside. Such a great idea to bring outside in with your decorating.
Just found your beautiful blog what an inspiration for us Ohio creatures who are staring out the windows at ice and snow for at least three more months LOL! Your house is lovely I’m determined to cosy things up a bit more! Oh your little dog is sweet I’m sure it’s on your blog what is his or her name?
Love the floor pouf and flannel pillow…where are they from?
Hi Shannon. They both came from Target a couple of years ago.
