Ideas For A Cozy Front Porch This Fall
There are an infinite amount of ways to decorate a front porch for fall, but how do you make it cozy?
Whether you’re sipping a warm drink or greeting neighbors, a cozy front porch is the perfect setting for relishing the cooler fall weather!
From color schemes that reflect the autumn landscape to a comfy place to wrap yourself in a blanket, we’ll get your outdoor space perfectly prepped for the season.
Color Scheme
When it comes to creating coziness on your porch this fall, the right color scheme can make all the difference.
If you want true coziness, warm, rich tones of burnt orange, deep reds, mustard yellows, and earthy browns should be your go-to colors.
You can bring these colors to your porch (without redecorating your entire space) with the addition of cushions, throw blankets, and even outdoor rugs and a welcome mat.
But if you prefer a more neutral palette, stick with shades of cream, beige, lighter brown and soft gray for furnishings and outdoor rugs. Then add pops of color with small items like pumpkins, lanterns, and wreaths.
Seating Arrangements
If you have room for a seating area on your porch, it’s a crucial area to get the arrangement right.
Strive to arrange furniture in such a way that it feels like an outdoor living room and is conducive to conversation.
- Rocking chairs are a classic and are probably the most popular type of seating for a front porch. Add a thick cushion and a cozy throw blanket to make them even more inviting. Not all rocking chairs are created equal, so be sure to check for comfort before purchasing.
- A porch swing may very well be the focal point on a porch. They tend to be the most popular seat of all. They are ideal for lounging (and napping!) and will add a nostalgic touch to your outdoor decor. Be sure to fill your swing with comfy throw pillows for leaning against the arms.
- A bench can usually accommodate more guests and will take up less space than multiple chairs. For maximum comfort, be sure to include a good seat cushion and throw pillows.
- Gliders are the next best thing to a rocking chair and can be more comfortable. We have had our Adirondack gliders for over five years and love them to this day.
- Convertible seating such as outdoor poufs or floor cushions are great to have on hand for kids or overflow seating. They can easily be moved around, stored when not in use, and can double as a side table when needed.
Textile touches
The one thing you can count on to make your porch cozy is the inclusion of textiles. They add warmth, comfort and that all important texture to your porch.
- A durable outdoor rug will anchor your seating area.
- Welcome guests with a seasonal doormat. Cozy bonus points for layered mats.
- Throw blankets that are chunky or furry make for maximum coziness.
- Throw pillows and cushions are a must for comfort.
Fall Planters
Planters filled with multiple varieties of seasonal plants are more lush than planters containing only a single bush and will contribute to the overall cozy feeling.
Mums are a fall favorite and are beautiful paired with ornamental cabbage and other fall plants. Other favorites for fall-themed planters are:
- pansies
- ornamental peppers
- sedum
- asters
- grasses
- wheat
- bare branches
Add pumpkins or other decorative elements for a touch of whimsy and interest.
Make it easy on yourself and purchase pre-planted garden containers that will fit inside of your own planters.
If you have tall planters, consider adding additional plants or stacking a few pumpkins, lanterns, or mini hay bales around the base.
Fall Wreath
No porch would be complete without a fall wreath gracing the front door. It’s the first thing that guests will notice and will set the tone for the rest of your porch decor.
When it comes to making a wreath, whether using faux or natural elements, they can be made from a huge variety of materials like dried leaves, twigs, berries, greenery, and autumn-colored ribbons.
If you’ve been around for a while, you’ve heard me say many times that grapevine wreaths are my favorite base.
Other Seasonal Decorations
There is all sorts of other front porch decor that you can add as well. Select one or several – it all depends on how full you want your porch to be.
Scatter pumpkins, gourds, and additional plants around the porch in groups.
To truly add a sense of coziness and privacy to your porch, add outdoor curtains.
Cornstalks can frame your doorway.
Strategically place lanterns filled with candles.
Create a pumpkin and mum display trailing down stairs.
Hang a fall garland around the door.
Scarecrows are great for fall and can carry right into Halloween.
